What is Dry eye syndrome?
This is a disease in which not only an insufficient amount of tears is produced, but its quality also suffers. And if left untreated, this seemingly small problem can lead to decreased vision and even blindness.
What are the first signs of dry eye syndrome?
Do you often work at a computer or watch TV for a long time and feel burning and irritated, your image blurs, but it becomes easier if you blink? When such irritation is observed more and more often, and blinking does not solve this problem, it means that you have developed dry eye syndrome.
The main sign is constant itching and burning in the eyes. It also creates a feeling of “sand”, I want to constantly rub my eyes. You feel uncomfortable after working at the computer or watching TV for a long time, suffer from photophobia and periodic blurred vision. Also, the appearance of viscous mucus in the corners of the eyes is possible.
Strangely enough, excessive tearfulness of the eye can also be a sign of dry eye syndrome, since the lacrimal glands produce a large number of tears to eliminate dryness, but these tears have poor lubricating properties. As a result of these manifestations, your ability to work decreases and your quality of life deteriorates.
The reasons leading to SSG:
Some diseases (diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis)
Taking certain medications (sleeping pills, hormonal drugs)
Uncontrolled instillation of vasoconstrictive drops
Environmental factors (dry climate, tobacco smoke, air conditioners)
Menopause
Long-term wearing of contact lenses, especially in case of untimely replacement
Treatment of dry eye syndrome
The treatment of dry eye syndrome consists in maintaining the maximum amount of natural moisture in the eye. Some of the medicines of artificial tears are liquid and do not last long. Others, thicker, stay on the surface of the eye longer. The application scheme is selected individually in each case.
